Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT DOCKING

At 2:14 AM, The North Star touched down at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport amidst a torrential downpour that grounded all commercial air traffic. The runway lights blurred into long streaks of yellow and red through the cockpit windshield.

Before the jet’s landing gear had even fully locked into place, the cabin door was pulled open from the outside by a soaking-wet man in a heavy tactical raincoat.

Marcus Thorne, head of Caldwell Security and Julian’s most trusted enforcer, stepped into the cabin. Water dripped from the brim of his cap as he saluted crisply.

"Boss," Marcus said without preamble. "We have eyes on the North Shore estate. Gregory Pike is still inside the main study, transferring the final tranches of the asset holdings to an off-shore account in the Cayman Islands. Vanessa is asleep in the master suite. The perimeter guards are on rotation, but we’ve got three tactical units stationed at the gates."

Julian strode down the aircraft stairs into the freezing rain, his tailored wool coat flapping behind him like the wings of a dark bird. He didn't reach for an umbrella. He climbed straight into the back of a bulletproof black Mercedes SUV idling on the tarmac.

"Tell me about the child-services operative Vanessa hired," Julian said, his voice lethal as Marcus slid into the passenger seat and slammed the door.

"Fake identity," Marcus reported, tapping furiously on a military-grade tablet. "A woman named Brenda Vance—no relation to Vanessa, just a coincidence of the criminal underworld. She runs an illegal adoption brokerage out of a warehouse in Cicero. She was scheduled to pick Mia up tomorrow at noon during the charity brunch."

Julian’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.

"Change of plans," Julian said coldly. "We aren't waiting until noon."

"Boss, if we strike now, Pike and Vanessa might destroy the primary ledger before we can recover the encryption keys. We need the physical hard drives from the office safe to freeze their international assets permanently."

"Let them try," Julian replied, his eyes fixed on the rain-streaked window as the SUV surged out of the airport gates and onto the highway toward Lake Michigan. "They can keep every penny they stole. But if my daughter has a single scratch on her, I’m feeding them both to the fish in the harbor."

Twenty minutes later, the Mercedes slipped silently through the iron gates of the North Shore estate, bypassing the security cameras by looping a feed loop recorded three hours earlier.

The house loomed against the dark, churning waters of the lake like a gothic fortress.

Julian stepped out into the rain, his boots crunching softly on the gravel driveway. He didn't go through the front entrance where the alarm sensors were wired. Instead, he walked around to the side terrace, climbed the wrought-iron trellis leading to the second-floor balcony, and shattered the reinforced glass door with a single, practiced strike of a tactical hammer.

He stepped into the silent, dark hallway of the mansion, moving with the terrifying, absolute quiet of a ghost.
