Chapter 5 - DAWN AT THE GATES OF MANHATTAN

Three days later, the sun broke through the heavy autumn clouds, casting a brilliant, golden light over the towering limestone pillars of the United States District Court in downtown Manhattan.
A crowd of reporters, television camera crews, and curious onlookers had gathered behind metal barricades, cameras flashing like lightning storms. Word had leaked overnight that a massive, historic corporate and probate challenge was about to be filed—one that threatened to dismantle the foundations of the Sterling-Vane empire.
A sleek black town car pulled smoothly up to the courthouse steps.
The rear door opened, and Ethan Bradley stepped out first, adjusting his suit jacket, his expression carved from granite.
Then, he turned and extended his hand.
Emily stepped out into the bright Manhattan sunlight. She wore a simple, elegant navy blue coat Flora had helped her select. Her hair was neatly brushed, falling in soft waves past her shoulders. Though a trace of her past hardship lingered in the serious set of her jaw, her head was held high.
As flashbulbs exploded around them, blinding the press corps, Emily did not flinch. She looked up at the towering marble pillars of the courthouse, and then beyond them, toward the bright, infinite blue of the autumn sky.
Across the broad stone plaza, parked in a shadowed limousine with tinted windows, Vivienne Sterling-Vane watched from behind the glass. Her aristocratic face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury as she stared at the young woman she had tried to erase from the world.

Vivienne reached for her phone to issue a final, desperate command to her security detail. But before her finger could touch the screen, two federal marshals stepped quietly out from the courthouse entrance, placing their hands firmly over the encrypted devices in her car and sliding cold steel handcuffs over the wrists of her chief legal counsel.
The trap had sprung. The foundation had cracked. And the girl who had once eaten grass to survive by a lonely Adirondack highway was finally walking back into her kingdom.
