Chapter 4 - THE LESSON OF THE LEFTOVERS

The public outcry was swift. Nathaniel Ashford, once the cold, calculating king of real estate, was now the hero of the city. But the physical battle was harder. There were legal hurdles, structural issues, and the constant threat of arson from the landlord’s thugs.

One night, the power went out. The city had cut the lines, claiming the grid couldn't handle the 'unauthorized' upgrades.

Grace and Nathaniel were in the community room, lighting candles.

"You could walk away," Grace said, watching the shadows dance on the walls. "You've already spent more than the building is worth."

"Worth is a funny concept," Nathaniel mused, looking at the children sleeping on their cots nearby. "For years, I thought it was a number. Now I see it’s a feeling. You taught me that, Grace. You showed me that the scraps I was throwing away were actually the only things in my life that had any weight."

"I never meant to shame you," Grace whispered.

"You didn't shame me. You awakened me."

He reached out and took her hand. It was the first time they had touched, and it felt more significant than any contract he had ever signed. He realized then that he didn't want to go back to the mansion. He wanted to be here, in the mess, the noise, and the raw, beautiful reality of a life that wasn't for sale.

Just then, the front door rattled. Voices shouted from outside—thugs sent by the landlord.

Nathaniel didn't reach for his phone to call security. He stood up, walked to the door, and locked it from the inside, standing in front of it. "Not tonight," he said.

The banging continued, but inside, the children stayed asleep. They were safe.
