Chapter 3 - THE DEFENSE OF MONSTERS

The courtroom of the county district court was packed to capacity when the trial began two months later.

Derek Vance and his mother, Teresa, sat at the defense table. They didn't look like the untouchable tyrants who had ruled their household with an iron fist. Derek looked hollowed out, his shoulders hunched in a gray jumpsuit, while Teresa glared venomously at the gallery whenever she thought no one was looking.

Their defense attorney, a high-priced corporate lawyer hired by a distant relative using hidden family assets, stood up to address the jury.

“Members of the jury, what you are hearing is a tragic exaggeration of domestic friction,” the lawyer argued smoothly, gesturing toward his clients. “A bitter wife, overwhelmed by grief following a tragic medical miscarriage, manipulated audio files and fabricated a narrative to punish her husband and mother-in-law for strict cultural standards. There is no physical evidence tying my clients to direct malice—”

“Objection, Your Honor,” the state prosecutor interrupted sharply, stepping up to the podium. “The state requests permission to play Exhibit A-1 through A-45: the unedited acoustic extractions recovered from the victim’s device, cross-referenced with cellular tower data and medical trauma logs.”

“Overruled, defense counsel is grasping at straws. Proceed,” Judge Thomas ordered, banging his gavel.

For three agonizing hours, the courtroom listened.

They listened to the cruel, mocking laughter of Derek as he tightened the ropes. They listened to Teresa’s voice instructing her son on how to degrade his wife so she wouldn't dare seek help. They listened to the terrifying, breathless gasps of a pregnant woman begging for mercy in the freezing dawn while her family treated her like livestock.

Several jurors covered their faces with their hands. One juror quietly wept.

When the audio finally ended, absolute, suffocating silence hung over the courtroom.

Derek stared straight down at the polished mahogany table, unable to lift his head. Teresa’s mouth opened and closed silently, her arrogant defense completely obliterated by the undeniable, echoing truth of her own words.

When Elena took the witness stand, she didn't scream or cry. She sat tall, her voice clear and steady as she recounted the years of abuse, the systematic erasure of her dignity, and the morning her son was stolen from her because two monsters believed her body was property.

The cross-examination by the defense lasted less than five minutes. Their lawyer asked no questions, realizing there was nothing left to salvage.
