Chapter 3 - THE GOLDEN CAGE

The transition from a cramped, drafty apartment in Highlandtown to a sprawling, sun-drenched penthouse suite overlooking Central Park felt less like a rescue and more like a kidnapping executed with exquisite politeness.

Gabriel hadn't given Elena a choice. When she tried to refuse the envelope, Marcus had simply placed her belongings into a sleek town car, escorted her mother’s medical transfer to a private, top-tier recovery wing at St. Luke’s, and deposited Elena into an ivory-and-gold guest suite that was larger than her entire previous apartment building.

"I don't belong here," Elena muttered to herself, pacing across the polished hardwood floor of her bedroom.

She wore a soft, silk-blend lounge set that a quiet, efficient housekeeper had left in her walk-in closet. The room smelled of fresh white orchids and rain. Yet, despite the luxury, Elena felt like a caged bird. She was used to struggling, to earning every crumb, to fighting for survival. Being handed a gilded cage terrified her far more than poverty ever had.

The heavy double doors of the suite clicked open.

Gabriel Moretti stood in the doorway. He had removed his overcoat; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, making him look less like a syndicate boss and more like a weary man carrying the weight of a kingdom.

"The housekeeper said you haven't touched dinner," Gabriel said, his voice smooth and commanding.

"I'm not hungry," Elena replied, crossing her arms defensively as she turned to face him. "Mr. Moretti, this is insane. You can't just uproot my life, pay off my debts, and lock me up in a fortress because I pulled your daughter out of a wreck."

"I didn't lock you up," Gabriel countered calmly, closing the distance between them with slow strides. "You are free to walk out of these doors whenever you choose. But my men outside will follow you, and every door you try to open in this city will already be paid for."

Elena glared at him, her hazel eyes flashing with sudden anger. "Why are you doing this? Why can't you just let me go back to my life?"

"Because your life was killing you," Gabriel said bluntly, stopping just a foot away from her. "I read your file, Elena. Two years ago, you owned a bakery called Morning Grace. You lost it because you chose to pay for your mother’s experimental Alzheimer’s treatments instead of your commercial lease. You’ve been working eighty-hour weeks, starving yourself, and breaking your back on a factory assembly line while ungrateful managers scream at you."

Elena flinched as if she had been struck. "That's none of your business."

"Everything concerning the woman who saved my daughter’s life is my business," Gabriel replied, his voice softening just enough to send a shiver down her spine.

Before Elena could retort, a soft knock echoed at the doorway.

A little girl with dark, curly hair and big, luminous hazel eyes peeked around the frame. She clutched a stuffed rabbit in one arm, her forehead bearing a faint, healing scratch from the accident.

"Daddy?" Chloe whispered shyly.

Gabriel’s entire demeanor transformed in an instant. The cold, ruthless titan melted away, replaced by an expression of fierce, unconditional paternal devotion. He crouched down, opening his arms.

"Come here, piccola," Gabriel murmured.

Chloe ran across the room and leaped into his arms, burying her face in his shoulder. Then, over her father’s shoulder, her eyes locked onto Elena standing by the window.

The little girl froze, pulling back. She stared at Elena’s face, studying her features, before a bright, gap-toothed smile broke across her face.

"You're the lady," Chloe whispered, pointing a small finger. "You're the one who pulled me out of the dark. You said we would make sure my daddy was there."

Elena’s throat tightened. She knelt down slowly, coming eye-to-eye with the little girl. "Hi, Chloe."

Chloe wriggled out of Gabriel’s arms, walked right up to Elena, and wrapped her small, warm arms tightly around Elena’s neck. "Thank you for saving me."

Elena closed her eyes, a tear slipping down her cheek as she hugged the child back. For the first time since she had dragged Chloe from the burning wreckage, the crushing weight in her chest lifted.

May you like

Standing behind them, watching the two of them with an unreadable expression in his ice-blue eyes, Gabriel Moretti made a silent vow.

Whatever forces had tried to destroy his family would burn to the ground. And Elena Vance would never have to fight alone again.
