Chapter 6 - The Federal Leak and the Traitor Within

The hospital room’s quiet atmosphere evaporated instantly, replaced by the cold, razor-sharp reality of the criminal underworld.
Victor’s demeanor shifted in a heartbeat. The vulnerable, reflective father vanished, replaced once again by the ruthless, calculating mafia boss who controlled half of the Midwest’s illicit economy.
He took the satellite phone from Marcus’s hand, pressing it tightly against his ear.
“Report,” Victor commanded.
A gravelly, panicked voice crackled through the encrypted speaker line: “Boss, it’s Petrov. We’ve got a massive leak coming out of the federal district attorney’s office. Someone handed over encrypted ledgers detailing our shipping routes through the port terminals. Federal warrants are being signed as we speak. They’re coming for the main warehouses tonight.”
Victor’s jaw tightened until the bone showed white beneath his skin. “Who has access to those encrypted ledgers?”
“Only the inner council, Boss,” Petrov replied nervously. “Marcus, you, and... and corporate legal counsel. Attorney Arthur Vance.”
Arthur Vance.
The name hung in the air like poison. Vance was not just an ordinary lawyer; he was the man Victor had trusted with his corporate shell companies for over a decade, a man who sat at the Blackwood dining table during holiday dinners, drank expensive scotch in the study, and smiled with oily charm.
“Vance,” Victor murmured, his voice laced with venomous quiet.
“The federals are moving fast, Boss,” Marcus warned, his hand resting near his concealed sidearm. “If Vance is cooperating with the DOJ, he’s probably trading our entire network in exchange for federal immunity and a plush witness protection deal. If they raid the primary warehouse on 4rd Street tonight, they’ll find the untraceable offshore cash reserves before we can relocate them.”
Victor turned slowly away from Lily’s bedside, walking toward the large reinforced window that overlooked the hospital parking lot far below. His mind worked with terrifying speed, calculating angles, exposures, and counter-strategies.
“They think they’ve cornered me,” Victor said quietly, a dangerous, razor-thin smile touching the corner of his mouth. “They think that by arresting Serena and leaking my ledgers, they can dismantle the Blackwood syndicate in one fell swoop.”
“What’s the play, Boss?” Marcus asked, stepping closer.
“We let them raid the 4th Street warehouse,” Victor replied smoothly.
Marcus blinked in surprise. “Boss? That warehouse holds twenty million in liquid bearer bonds!”
“Let them find it,” Victor’s slate-gray eyes flashed with cold brilliance. “Every single bond serial number in that specific vault was quietly swapped out three months ago for counterfeit paper bearing federal tracking traps. Let Vance hand over my ‘ledgers.’ Those ledgers were routed through a dead-drop server in Zurich that logs every IP address trying to decrypt them. By midnight, I won't just know that Arthur Vance betrayed me—I’ll have federal proof that he’s been skimming millions from my own accounts while selling out his clients.”
Marcus let out a low whistle of profound admiration. “A honey pot. You set a trap for him months ago.”
“I set a trap for anyone who forgot who built this empire,” Victor corrected coldly. He turned back toward Lily, who was watching him with wide, astonished eyes.
The sheer magnitude of the world Victor inhabited—a world of billion-dollar syndicates, federal sting operations, and chess games played with human lives—was crashing down around her. She was just a nanny from a working-class neighborhood, yet here she sat in the epicenter of a multi-million-dollar criminal war.
“Lily,” Victor said, stepping back to her bedside. “Things are about to get very loud in Chicago over the next forty-eight hours. Marcus will arrange immediate transport for you and Ethan to our safehouse in Lake Geneva. You’ll be completely secure there while I handle the cleanup in the city.”

“What about you?” Lily asked, a sudden, inexplicable knot forming in her stomach.
“I have some unfinished business to attend to with an old friend named Arthur Vance,” Victor replied, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, chilling finality.
