Chapter 5 - CHECKMATE AT THE COURTHOUSE

The steps of the municipal courthouse were swarming with flashing camera bulbs, television crews, and shouting journalists when our convoy of black SUVs pulled directly onto the paved plaza.

Viktor Vance stood at the top of the grand marble steps, flanked by a half-dozen high-priced corporate lawyers, speaking loudly into a cluster of microphones.

“...and let me be clear,” Vance was shouting, his face slick with arrogant confidence. “Ryker Steel is illegally harboring minor children and embezzling multi-million-dollar corporate assets that rightfully belong to our syndicate. We demand an immediate federal audit and the surrender of—”

The heavy oak doors of the courthouse swung wide open.

The cameras stopped flashing for a fraction of a second as the entire media horde turned their collective gaze toward the entrance.

I stepped out into the bright midday sun.

I wasn't alone.

In my right hand, I held Owen’s small, warm hand. In my left, I held Lily’s. Both children were dressed in immaculate miniature suits and dresses, looking up at me with absolute, unshakable trust. Behind us walked Marco and a phalanx of federal marshals carrying thick, leather-bound federal indictments stamped with the Department of Justice's highest clearance seals.

A collective gasp swept through the crowd of reporters.

Viktor Vance turned pale, his microphone wobbling in his hand as I walked steadily down the stone steps toward him, towering over his expensive suit like an executioner approaching the scaffold.

“Mr. Steel!” a reporter shouted, thrusting a microphone forward. “Are these the children at the center of the dispute? What do you have to say about Mr. Vance’s allegations?”

I stopped ten feet away from Viktor Vance, letting my gaze sweep over the sweating, trembling syndicate boss.

“Mr. Vance alleges that these children belong to a disputed estate,” I said into the forest of microphones, my voice deep, resonant, and carrying absolute, unshakeable power across the entire plaza. “He is lying.”

Vance found his voice, stepping forward defensively. “You have no legal right to them! Those funds belong to—”

“Those funds,” I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave into a razor-sharp whisper, “belong to the direct bloodline of the Steel Line. And as of this morning, federal prosecutors have seized every single asset, bank account, and safehouse owned by your syndicate under charges of racketeering, extortion, and attempted kidnapping.”

Before Vance could react, two federal marshals stepped past me, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a sharp, echoing click.

“Viktor Vance, you are under arrest,” the lead marshal announced to the flashing cameras.

The crowd erupted into chaos. Microphones shoved forward, flashbulbs blinded the morning light, and reporters shouted questions over one another. But amidst the deafening noise, I didn't flinch.

I knelt down right there on the courthouse steps, looking into the bright, beautiful blue eyes of Owen and Lily.

“You see that, kids?” I whispered, smiling gently as I wiped a stray curl from Lily’s forehead. “The bad guys are gone. Forever.”

Lily threw her arms around my neck, burying her face against my shoulder, while Owen quietly reached into his pocket and placed his worn-out stuffed bear right into my coat pocket for safe keeping.

“We love you, Daddy,” Lily whispered softly.

My heart, which had been frozen in ice for fifteen years, completely melted.

I stood back up, holding my children tightly against my sides, and walked past the flashing cameras toward the waiting cars. The storm was over. The past was buried. And the Steel empire had finally found its true soul.
