Chapter 3 - THE SHADOWS STRIKE BACK

Two weeks after the engagement was shattered, the fallout hit the corporate world with volcanic force.

Arthur Sterling, Vanessa’s disgraced father and a minor stakeholder in Whitfield Global Logistics, refused to accept his family’s public humiliation lying down. He had spent thirty years building alliances in Chicago and New York, using bribery, insider trading, and corporate blackmail to keep his sinking fortune afloat.

He viewed Nathan’s public rejection of Vanessa not just as a broken romance, but as a declaration of war.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when the security alarms at the Greenwich estate began to chirp.

Nathan was in his private study on the ground floor, reviewing shipping manifests, while Claire and Lily were baking cookies in the expansive kitchen with Mrs. Gable.

Without warning, the heavy oak doors of the study flew open.

Arthur Sterling strode into the room, flanked by two burly private security guards he had illegally hired. His face was purple with rage, his expensive gray suit soaked from the rain.

Nathan didn't even flinch. He slowly leaned back in his leather desk chair, resting his elbows on the armrests, his dark eyes locking onto Arthur with chilling composure.

“You have a lot of nerve walking onto my property, Arthur,” Nathan said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.

“You humiliated my family, Nathan!” Arthur snarled, slamming a leather briefcase down onto the edge of the desk. “You broke a legally binding merger agreement over a penniless housekeeper and her bastard brat! Do you have any idea what you’ve done to our stock?”

Nathan stood up slowly. He towered over Arthur, his sheer physical presence causing the two hired guards to nervously shift their weight.

“Your stock was plummeting before I ever met Claire,” Nathan said coldly. “Your family has been embezzling from the subsidiary shipping trusts for five years. I kept quiet out of respect for your deceased father. If you don't walk out of my house in the next ten seconds, I won't just cancel the merger—I’ll hand the federal indictments straight to the DOJ.”

Arthur sneered, his lips curling back from his teeth. “You think you’re untouchable, Nathan? You think because you sit in this fortress of stone and glass, you can destroy the Sterling name?”

He reached into his briefcase, pulling out a thick manila envelope and tossing it onto the desk.

“Check your emails,” Arthur spat venomously. “Or look at what I just sent to every major news outlet in the country. We couldn't buy your compliance, Nathan, but we can destroy your reputation. We found the medical records of your late wife’s fatal crash. We found the toxicology reports. We know the truth about what happened on that highway six years ago.”

Nathan’s breath caught. The color drained from his face so fast it looked like he had been struck with a hammer.

Arthur laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “That’s right, Nathan. You thought you hid the past? You thought you were the victim? Wait until the world finds out who really caused the accident that killed Caroline and little Emma. Let’s see how your new little housekeeper looks at you when she finds out you’re a murderer.”

Before Arthur could turn toward the door, Nathan moved with terrifying speed.

He vaulted across the desk, grabbed Arthur by the lapels of his soaked suit, and slammed him against the mahogany bookshelf with enough force to shatter three rows of first-edition leather-bound volumes.

“Say that again,” Nathan growled, his voice a low, murderous roar that vibrated through the floorboards. “Say it again, you son of a bitch.”

Arthur choked for air, his eyes wide with genuine terror as he stared into the face of a man who looked ready to commit murder. “The... the files... are already sent...”
